what is the most inexpensive, eco friendly car available in the US?

i was reading about the Tata Nano which only costs $2500 but is not yet in the states. it also only has 33hp- i was hoping for something with a little more oomph. what are my other options for small fuel friendly cars?

    Mini Cooper. 32/40
    smart Car. 27/33 I believe.
    Or the RSX. 25/29.

    The chevrolet aveo is small and gets 36 mpg and it has 103hp and starts at 10000

    My 1996 1.3 liter geo metro gets about 35mpg real-world. I’m not sure what it was rated for. I paid $2K for it, it has four doors and room in the trunk. I’ve seen the other cars mentioned and to be honest, I’m completely dumbfounded as to why my old 1.3 liter car still gets way better milage.

    In a nutshell, shop around for geos in good condition becasue everything new on the market now is still not as good in gas or functionality.
